Vusimpilo Livestock Liver Abscess:
Etiology and Pathogenesis:
- Liver abscesses in cattle are localized bacterial infections within the liver.
- The main culprit is Fusobacterium necrophorum, an anaerobic bacterium from the rumen.
- These infections often stem from rumenitis, triggered by excessive carbohydrate fermentation (“grain overload”).
- Biovar A is the more virulent strain, while Biovar B is less common.
Clinical Signs and Diagnosis:
- Clinical signs may be absent, but affected animals don’t gain weight well.
- Liver abscesses are typically discovered incidentally during slaughter.
- Affected livers are condemned, and adhesions may require trimming.
Treatment and Control:
- Preventive measures include reducing high-grain diets to prevent rumenitis.
- Individual treatment isn’t common due to lack of clinical signs.
- Herd health strategies focus on rumenitis prevention.
- Liver abscesses can lead to complications like caudal vena caval thrombosis.
Vusimpilo Usage Instructions:
